I was wondering about simulating human behaviour, most people use URL shorteners when posting on twitter and I think I see it spreading onto other mediums also like forums ect. I was looking at the link profile of a web site to access competition and a great deal of the links were from mumsnet.com, who knew you could rank well just from that! The links were like the ones you would see built, standard ‘here are some stylish perambulators for your delectation’ types. I’m sure it matters not whether it says ‘here’ or ‘baby buggie’, for that type of link, but what if people move from the embedded link type sharing to URL shortening type sharing?
“Does it count as a link?†Is what I ask about every thing.
“What if I had spay painted an url on the out side of my house before street view drove past?? Would it have counted as a link!!†No, don’t be silly. Amazing idea however would be to make a stencil of a link and then spray paint that link in odd places. Claim you were link building IRL.
Well back to the shortened URLs, only one way to find out if they count.
Simple test.
Take the first 7 URL shorteners:
bit.ly
goo.gl (the one I think will work, wonder why)
tiny.cc
is.gd
ity.im
ow.ly (hoot hoot!!)
u2s.in
Then shorten the link to our website:
http://bit.ly/fj9Kqj
http://goo.gl/jTzCp
http://tiny.cc/kxgmu
http://is.gd/4gf7oc
http://ity.im/06oWP
http://ow.ly/3MucF
http://www.u2s.in/bvm
Build them into a link with a randomly generated string:

5c3c74526935265f68495b664e
6b4b33507e473457383a45215e
Then post them as links on article sites.
Well there you are, which ones will show the mayhemnewmedia web site when you google the random string of number and which will just show that the numbers have been published some where. You can try that bit for your self, but what I found was the goo.gl, tiny.cc and is.gd all showed mayhemnewmedia as the top result. The other four just show the articles where the random string is present.
So, if we / you do start using URL shorteners then this should be taken into consideration.

I love posts were people actually do some quality, original research and reveal something useful!
Nice work!
That’s a good idea. But you’ll have the problem with the random text being indexed as content, not as a backlink – which is what you’re trying to prove. It would have been better to use those string on an external site as a followed link. However, a good rule of thumb is as long as you’re getting a 301 redirect from the link then youre good, as you’ll get credit for thaty link.
Hi Rob, sorry it took so long to approve your comment! What we are proving is that using the correct URL shortener results in a clean 301 and therefore passes authority, Page Rank and Anchor Text through. The random strings don’t matter, we just needed unique strings to track in Google.
SEO marketing is the most important aspect to help your site rank higher. Submitting your site to SEO is not difficult but it needs you to invest lots of your time, efforts and painstaking work that needs more knowledge. Now, it is nice to hear that we can use URL shorteners so we can post it on Twitter and not exceed the 140 character limit .†According to Google’s SEO voice, Matt Cutts, using URL shorteners has absolutely no negative impact on SEO provided the URL shortener in question is functioning properly and treats the conversion as a 301 redirect.â€
Can’t workout if this is spam or not??
